Italianity and Cultural Roots

Italian Cultural Institute of New York
New York, NY
April 5, 2024

The Conference, promoted by the Magna Grecia Foundation and the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College, represents the first step in a path of in-depth exploration and study of the relational dynamics and influence of Italian culture in the world, which the two institutes intend to propose over time.

The modern concept of italianity is manifested through a series of material and immaterial values, rooted in distant historical origins and complex paths, often difficult or underestimated, such as emigration, which has brought Italian culture to many countries around the world, spreading those unique values recognized as world heritage, influencing all categories of thought, art, architecture, music, beauty, taste, design, and technology.

The event, which will see the participation of personalities from the Italian and American institutional, cultural, and economic world, will delve into the main themes underlying the concept of Italianity in the United States, analyzing how and to what extent these influence social and economic dynamics between the two countries, and how they represent a "bridge" with young Italians of origin who, according to recent studies, would need a greater connection with Italian culture compared to previous generations.

The Magna Grecia Foundation returns to New York to promote the establishment of an “Observatory on Italianity and Cultural Roots,” in collaboration with the associations of Italian American Leadership Forum IALF, Italian American Policy Center IAPC, and the Italian Cultural Institute of New York. The project represents an important “call to action” for all stakeholders interested in delving into issues related to Italian identity and its cultural and economic aspects, heritage tourism and relations between the United States and Italy through studies, research, and training and information projects.

The invitation from the Magna Grecia Foundation to join the Observatory is therefore open to the participation of public and private institutions, businesses, and all prestigious associational representations of Italians in the USA.
